Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT),
developed by
Marsha M. Linehan, Ph.D., ABPP, at the University of
Washington, is a systematic cognitive-behavioural treatment for
borderline
personality disorder (BPD)
especially for individuals with chronic patterns of suicidal or
other severe dysfunctional behaviours. Since its inception, DBT has
been adapted as a treatment for other complex, difficult-to-treat
disorders including co-occurring conditions. Balancing acceptance
and change strategies, DBT calls on the patient and the therapist to
accept reality while maintaining a strong and conscious commitment
to change.
Research has shown DBT to effectively
reduce suicidal behaviour, dropout from treatment, psychiatric
hospitalization, anger, and interpersonal difficulties. DBT also has
been adapted to treating substance-abusing individuals with BPD and
shown to be effective for this population. Research in
Australia is starting to emerge with significant findings recently
presented at the conclusion of our Intensive Training Course by
Logan
Adult Mental Health Service.
Using DBT,
Logan Adult Mental Health Service in Queensland have found…
·
45% of participants had a significant reduction in the severity
of self harming incidents,
in that all attempts during the group met the criteria of ‘no
danger’ at all.
·
The number and length of hospital stays decreased over both
groups, saving the local
hospital system $49 520.
·
there was a significant
reduction in the duration of face to face contact by a total of
76 hours.
·
GAF results indicate significantly
improved overall psychological,
social and occupational functioning of participants’
following DBT.
·
54% of participants, who had “severe” depression
prior to the group, completed the group within the range of
“moderate” to “minimal” depression.
·
Of participants that have completed the DBT program
only 3 remain in the mental
health service
